Dual Phase Extraction
Industrial job sites often face the task of remediation as a direct result of on-site production activities, or an industrial spill. When extraction of hazardous materials or tainted water remediation is necessary, it’s wise to know more about one of the most common remediation processes used.
For various types of contaminated ground water, typically dual phase extraction (DPE), is an ideal process. This technology uses a high vacuum system in combination with a downhole pump to remove the ground water. It will also separate petroleum and hydrocarbon vapor from the subsurface.
This dual phase extraction process works to lower the water table around the well, and this exposes more of the formation so that the contaminants are then more accessible. Once the extracted vapors or liquids are above ground, the water is separated and treated.
DPE for liquid/vapor treatment is generally combined with bioremediation, air sparging, or bioventing when the target contaminants include long-chained hydrocarbons. Use of dual phase extraction with these technologies can shorten the cleanup time at a site. It also can be used with pump-and-treat technologies to recover ground water in higher-yielding aquifers.
Most often, the basic equipment needed for dual phase extraction is a vacuum blower or pump, with other attachments if necessary. Of course, there’s a large variety of vacuum blowers and pumps that will generate many different air flow and vacuum levels needed for the intensity of the extraction.
Because vacuum blowers or pumps take a beating and can sometimes be damaged by dual phase extraction, it’s common to also have a moisture separator for protection. In addition, there are also special particulate filters available which can be used to protect the blowers or pumps from dust, dirt and debris.
